Football fends off comeback from Helias, advances to state semifinals

Nixa football defeated the Helias Catholic Crusaders 45-28 in the Class 6 state quarterfinals, advancing to its second-consecutive final four and a date with the Pattonville Pirates.

After jumping out to a 28-0 lead, the Eagles held off a gritty comeback from the Crusaders, who scored their first touchdown with less than a minute remaining in the first half. Helias brought the game within one possession, 35-28, with roughly 10 minutes left. Jonah Fields shifted momentum back to the Eagles with a program-record-setting 52-yard field goal on Nixa's next drive, ultimately sealing the victory. (Watch Fields' 52-yard field goal here.)

Nixa (12-0) will travel to the St. Louis area and faces Pattonville (7-5) in the Class 6 state semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 29, at 1 p.m. Pattonville defeated Ft. Zumwalt West 56-42 in its semis. Jackson beat powerhouse CBC 45-42, and Lee's Summit won 24-14 over Liberty on the side of the bracket.
