Nixa Edges Webb City to Shake Up COC

Eagles score four in sixth, snap Cardinals' 13-game winning streak

WEBB CITY, Mo. — The Webb City Cardinals had quite the run through the month of April.

All 13 games resulted in victories, including four COC Large Division wins and a Fort Scott tournament title.

At the month's end, Webb City owned a 13-game winning streak and a 6-0 league as it chases its first league title in 10 years.

On Tuesday, the first day of May, Webb City played host to the Nixa Eagles, who sported just one league loss. Once the dust settled, the Cardinals dropped their first game since March 31 and the Eagles won a ninth consecutive contest with a 7-6 decision at Barnes Field.

"To get through this conference without a loss is a tough chore," Webb City coach Garry Highfill said. "We were starting to smell it, that maybe we had a shot. But it just wasn't meant to be for us."

Webb City slipped to 20-3, 6-1 and into a tie with Nixa (18-5, 6-1) atop the league standings. Sitting closely behind is Ozark (14-8, 5-1), who beat Neosho 4-3 on Tuesday.

The conference race will be decided by next Wednesday. The Cardinals host Carthage in their league finale at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Ozark travels to Republic on Thursday before hosting Carthage on Tuesday. Nixa caps league action at home next Wednesday against Willard.
