Having already been intentionally walked once Tuesday, Nixa's Morgan Jones wondered if she might not get to take her bat off her shoulders again.
With two teammates on base, first base open and most importantly, no one out in the sixth inning, Jones got ahead in the count 2-0 when she quickly glanced back at the home-plate umpire.
"It was a look of fear," said Jones, who is hitting .533 with two home runs and eight RBIs. "I was thinking, 'Please don't tell me, I'm going to first.' I really wanted to hit."
Jones received a strike and belted it for a two-run double as part of the Lady Eagles' breakaway four-run sixth in their long-awaited 7-0 triumph over Ozark.
No one on Nixa's roster had ever beaten the Lady Tigers during regular-season play.
"We've been looking forward to this for a long time," said second baseman Kat Mitchell, who had two hits and an RBI. "We've beaten them before in the summer. But they didn't have all their ace players there."
Not even the return of Ozark slugger Nya Morgan could keep Nixa (5-0 overall and 3-0 in the Central Ozark Conference) from what had been an oh so elusive win.
"I've struggled against them," Jones said. "I've gone out and been nervous for some reason against them. This year, I was like, 'Senior year, let's have fun with it.' There was no doubt in my mind we could take this game."
Jones was at her best under pressure. Ozark (3-2 and 1-1) loaded the bases in the third and fifth, only to be turned away.
