Joe Reid had been slightly agitated at opposing pitchers for not letting him see many strikes one week into the season. He was mad at himself Thursday for not adjusting initially to Rogersville's change of pitchers.
Reid took out his anger on the Wildcats and left U.S. Baseball Park with plenty to smile about after blasting two home runs in Nixa's 11-5 triumph over Rogersville.
Reid's second homer surely will be the talk of the southwest Missouri baseball world through this weekend. The right-handed junior catcher sent a three-run homer over a section of the 20-foot fence featuring Cox Health advertising in between left-center and straightaway center.
With straightaway center measuring 400 feet, estimates were Reid's homer traveled 415-420 feet.
"I wasn't trying to do too much. Coach (Jason) Daugherty is big on that," Reid said of what will remembered as a legendary at-bat. "We don't try to hit it out. We just try to get on base. You're never swinging for the fences here, anyway. Its too big to do that. I was just trying to hit it hard and see where it landed."
For many on hand, it was the longest homer they've seen a high school hitter slug.
"That was probably the third farthest ball I've seen him hit," Daugherty said, insisting Reid has gone deeper on couple occasions in practices. "He's got power. If he barrels one up, it's going to take off. That was a good shot. That ball was destroyed. This park is humongous. It takes a shot to get out of here."
The vast dimensions at U.S. Baseball Park may have been a reason why Rogersville's pitchers challenged Reid. Whatever the reason, the Oklahoma State commit enjoyed a reprieve from teams pitching around him. He was walked five times in Nixa's first three games. Strafford walked him three times.
"I've kind of started to get that this year," Reid said of teams being ultra-careful against him. "Teams are starting me with off-speed (pitches). I have to keep the same approach — the first two pitches I'm looking to get a pitch I can hit really hard and if I get two strikes on me, I'm protecting the plate. Up until two strikes, I'm looking for my pitch.
"I was ready to swing today. It was good to swing the bat again."
A solid session of batting practice Wednesday carried over to Thursday.
"He started feeling a little better yesterday in the cage," Daugherty said. "He started to get his rhythm. He even said he thought he found it. He'd been doing fine. But he hadn't been the same Joe Reid. Today was the Joe Reid I've come to hope for and expect."
