Eagles drop regular-season home finale while dealt first COC loss

Pat Dailey, for Headliner Sports

As one of 11 seniors honored during Nixa's 'Senior Night' ceremony Thursday, second baseman Kinsen Michel was dreading walking off the Eagles' home field in uniform for possibly the final time.

"I love this field," he said. "I've played here for four years and am going to miss it. I'm already starting to miss it."

Nixa's seniors weren't able to walk away winners. The Eagles' winning streak ended at 13 games, as Webb City handed the mistake-prone hosts a 3-1 defeat.

Nixa (18-2 overall and 6-1 in the COC) had more errors than hits. The Eagles' six miscues led to two unearned runs. Compounding their troubles, they managed just five hits.

"We usually don't many mistakes at all," Michel said. "I don't know what happened today. But we struggled."

"In baseball, it's tough to win all the time," Nixa coach Jason Daugherty added. "We've been fortunate enough to do it lately. But we're not so good that we're going to win every game and we didn't play very well today."

Daugherty feared such an outcome, given his experiences of extra field work being needed following a morning rain on a game day.

"Every time you work hard on the field because of rain it seems inevitable that you play poorly," Daugherty said. "Our routine was messed up.  I was down here trying to get the field ready. Usually, I'm up in the cages with them giving them a couple rounds of B.P. I still threw one round of B.P. to each of our starters. But usually it's a longer process.

"I don't think our focus was there tonight. When you're not focused and don't play sharp against a good team, you're going to get beat."

Webb City jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning and added a run in the third and one more in the seventh off of starting pitcher Jake Uber and reliever Ace Akers.

Nixa, which beat the Cardinals 9-6 as part of the Lael Leadoff Classic in March, finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth. Evann Long singled, stole second base and was brought home on an RBI-double by Joe Reid.

After Devon Roach subbed in for Reid as a pinch-runner, Hunter Crabtree laced a two-out single to left field. Daugherty waved Roach home. But a one-hop throw from Webb City left-fielder Manuel Peskar nailed Roach out at the plate.
