Eight state qualifiers give Nixa second place finish at districts

NIXA, Missouri - A record eight members of the Nixa boys wrestling team are headed to Mizzou Arena to compete at state after finishing second in districts. 

In a tight race throughout the entire tournament, Ozark edged Nixa by just 16 in the team standings. Nixa's 160 points ousted third-place Lebanon by five and half points.

The Eagles had three individual golds with Zan Fugitt at 120, Peyton Moore at 126, and John Gholson at 285.

Aidan Ward at 132 and Brennan Carey at 195 took silver.

Nate Brower at 145, Avry Rutherford at 182, and Peyton Nevels at 220 got a spot on the podium with fourth place.

Fugitt defeated all four of his opponents by fall in 0:49, 1:17, 1:28, and pinned Lee's Summit's Cooper Nally (38-9) in 0:38.

Zan Fugitt, committed to Oklahoma, goes into state with a 43-1 record.

Missouri commit Moore pinned his first three opponents in 1:38, 1:40, and 1:06 before ousting Lebanon's Davis Joiner (34-9) by decision 13-6.

Peyton Moore will be wrestling at his future home with a 34-4 record.

Gholson won his first two matches by fall in 0:36 and 0:54, and by decision in the semifinals and first-place match. He beat Joplin's Gunner Price (24-8) 4-2 and Lebanon's Zachary Smith (33-8) 5-2.

John Gholson is 35-5 going into state.

Aidan Ward (24-9) defeated his first two opponents by fall in 1:55 and 3:26, before beating Lee's Summit North's Ryan McNeel (37-12) by decision 13-8. Ward fell to Lebanon's Andrew Boling (31-11) by decision 6-1.

Brennan Carey (29-9) won by decision in his first match 5-1 and by fall at 2:48 in the semis over Ray-Pec's Jaylen Nevins (24-16). Carey fell the championship bout 5-4 in a tightly contested battle against Smith-Cotton's Everett Wood (22-5).

Nate Brower (24-20) had a long and enduring tournament, wrestling six matches. Brower won his first match by fall in 3:27, fell by decision 15-10 in the quarterfinals, won the consolation rounds by fall in 3:54 and 1:52, and by major decision 13-3. He fell in the third-place match to Carthage's Grey Petticrew (26-8) by fall in 4:18.

Avry Rutherford (27-13) won his first two matches by decision 11-4 and by fall in 1:20, before falling to Lebanon's Cade Muscia (38-6) by injury. Rutherford won by decision 2-0 in the consolation semis to qualify for state before falling to Kickapoo's Tai Koyama (33-4) by injury.

Peyton Nevels came into districts with a small sample size of only thirteen matches, but left districts with a fourth-place finish and a 15-3 record. Nevels fell his first match by decision 3-2, then rattled off three-straight victories by decision 2-0, decision 2-1, and by opponent forfeit. He fell to Smith-Cotton's Elias Washington (9-5) by fall in 0:15.

The 92nd MSHSAA Wrestling Championships will be held February 17-19 at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Mo.
