11/9/2023 8:42:00 AM

The 2023 Missouri State High School Activities Association's (MSHSAA) Boys Swimming and Diving Class 2 State Championships will be held on Nov. 10 and 11, at the St. Peter's Rec-Plex in St. Peter's, Mo.

The preliminary rounds are on Friday, Nov. 10, and begins at 4:30 p.m.

The diving competition begins on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 9 a.m.

The swimming finals are on Saturday, Nov. 11, and are scheduled to start at 3 p.m.

According to MSHSAA's standards, the top 32 times in each event by individuals in the state qualify for the state meet. The top eight divers in each district (four districts total) advance to the state meet, compiling 32 total for the state competition.

Nixa qualified in all three relays, and junior Gavin Jessen qualified individually for his second-consecutive appearance, and will compete in the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle. Jessen's season-best time of 54.80 in the fly ranks him 19th prior to the meet, and 21st in free at 5:03.09. Those times sets up Jessen in a prime position to advance to the day two, if he can match or surpass each. In 2022, Jessen placed 26th in the fly at 56.62 and 26th in the 200 free. The 500 free marks the first time he will be competing in the event.

Jessen will also swim a leg in the 200 and 400-free relays with teammates junior Ethan Gordon, junior Quinn Cates, and senior Levi Crow. The 400 team enters state with a season-best time of 3:32.69, ranking the four 20th, while the 200 team enters at 1:37.68, ranking 26th.

With the exception of Crow, the three competed in the same relays a year ago with graduate Kai Browlee and advanced the finals in the 200, placing 16th at 1:34.66. In the 400, the quartet placed 20th at 3:28.33.

The 200-medley relay team of Gordon, Cates, Crow, and senior Brayden Sanders qualified in the event, entering with the 28th fastest time of 1:52.83. Similar to the freestyle relays, Gordon, Cates, and Crow competed in the event in 2022 with Bryson Koerber and placed 29th at 1:57.70. Sanders competes for the first time.
