Following a top-four district performance, the Nixa track and field team qualified in 15 boys and nine girls events for the Class 5 Sectional 3 meet on May 23 at Waynesville High School, vying to extend its season an additional week at the elusive state championships.

The top four individuals punched their tickets to the Class 5 state meet on May 29-30 in Jefferson City, Mo.

The Eagles earned 12 state berths on the boys side, including seven sectional champions.

Senior and DI Auburn University signee Hayden Mays won the discus and finished as the runner-up in the shot put with throws of 56.01m and 18.15m, respectively. Mays will make his fourth-straight state appearance, seeking to hoist the gold for the first time in his illustrious career. He was runner-up a year ago, bronze medalist (2024), and fifth-place medalist (2023) during his tenure.

With former teammate and training partner Jackson Cantwell graduating early, Mays is positioned to capture his first gold in the shot put after silver medal performances in 2025 and 2024.

Mays enters the 2026 state championships with the top discus throw of 59.37m set at the Willard meet. His top throw is almost two meters ahead of the No. 2 ranking (57.95m). In the shot put, he ranks No. 2 with a throw of 18.82m achieved in the season-opening meet at Pittsburg State. The top throw is 19.81m.

Gedaliah Chepkondol topped the entire field in the 110m and 300m hurdles, finishing with personal-best times of 14.60 and 38.01, respectively. Chepkondol will compete in his first state meet with expectations of earning a medal, as Chepkondol enters ranked second in Class 5 for the 300m and fifth in the 110m. The top time in the 300m is 37.91 and 14.15 in the 110m.

Senior and Pittsburg State University signee Reyes Martinez clocked in at 9:29.53 to win first by over two seconds, qualifying the Nixa record holder for a second-straight appearance. Martinez's time ranks him No. 11 entering the meet, with the top time being 8:49.10.

All four relay teams punched state berths, with all but the 4x800 running to a top finish.

The 4x200 team of Jax Adams, Jaren Davis, Randy Flint, and Chepkondol ran a season-best and No. 2-fastest time in Class 5 of 1:25.77 to win first place. The top time is 1:22.77. Flint and Davis were members of the 2025 team with Troy Huff and Keivon Flint that placed fifth (1:26.37), capturing the program's first medal since 2001.

The 4x400 team of Toby Thompson, Roy Perez, Nicholas Krueger, and Chepkondol claimed a gold place and ran a season-best performance of 3:19.94, qualifying for a second-straight year in the event. The four enter this year's meet with the eight fastest time. Thompson and Perez were medalists on last year's team that placed sixth (3:19.35), the first medal for Nixa since 2019. The top time in Class 5 is 3:15.48.

The 4x100 of Adams, Chepkondol, Thompson, and Flint also had a season-best time, winning sectionals at 41.80, marking the seventh-fastest time entering the meet. The top time is 40.71. Adams and Flint ran legs on last year's qualifying team.

The 4x800 team of Reyes Martinez, Asher Coorts, Dylan Mabe, and Alex Flannery edged Ray-Pec by nearly 10 seconds to place fourth at sectionals with a time of 7:58.13, earning a third-straight berth in the event. The four are seeking to capture a third straight medal as well. Flannery is a two-time competitor in the event with two medals. He was a member of the sixth-place team in 2024 and the eighth-place team a year ago, with Martinez and Coorts, which finished with a time of 7:55.24. They enter the 2026 championships ranked 14th. The top time is 7:40.02.

The Eagles were also runners-up in two additional events.

Randy Flint placed second in the 200m, clocking in at 21.44 and setting a new personal best. Flint secured his second consecutive berth after placing ninth in 2025. The senior enters this year's meet with the seventh-fastest time, with the top mark being 20.79.

Toby Thompson ran to a silver finish in the 400m at 50.02. The senior enters his final go-around ranked 26th with a time of 49.82 set at districts.

Senior and 2025 bronze medalist Will Sanley placed third in the pole vault with a leap of 4.20m, earning back-to-back qualifications. Sanley's top mark is 4.57m set at the Liberty North Ken Peek Invite, where he won the event and set a season-best. That ranks Sanley No. 4 prior to state, as the top leap is 4.80m.
