Sectional track meet recap: 4x800 relay sets Nixa record, plethora of Eagles, Lady Eagles headed to State

The Nixa track and field team competed in the Class 5 Sectional 3 meet on May 22 at Carthage High School

Multiple Eagles and Lady Eagles punched their ticket to the Class 5 State championships on May 27, after posting a top-four finish at sectionals.

Nixa was highlighted on the day by the girls 4x800 relay team of Alicen Ashley, Brooke Bidinger, Emily Harris and Macy Kopp. The team won the event by over eight seconds over COC foe Republic with a time of 9:47.22. That time also marked the four as
Nixa's new all-time record holders, surpassing the previous time of 9:50.86 set by the 2015 team of Marchandise, Moon, Jones and Park.

Tony Perez was the final individual champion for Nixa. Perez won the discus championship by over three meters with a throw of 48.44m. Glendale's Dominic Nicholls was second at 45.15m. Also in the discus, Perez will be accompanied at state with Carter Krummen who placed fourth at 41.10m.

Nixa also finished with three runner-up finishes by Michael Sportsman, Lily Simmons and the girls 4x100 relay team of Camilia Figueroa, Raegan Thomason, Ali Kamies and Faith Chepkondol.

Sportsman cleared 1.87m in the high jump and will be making his second return to state in the event.

Simmons cleared 1.6m in the high jump en route to that second-place finish. Simmons also qualified for state in the 100 hurdles with a third-place time of 16.07.

The girls 4x100 finished at 50.58 to secure their right at state. Jefferson City came in at first with a time of 50.22. 

A plethora of Eagles and Lady Eagles came in at third place and qualified for state. 

Alicen Ashley will be making her second trip to state in the 3200, as she came in with a time of 11:49.72. Emily Harris was right behind Ashley at fourth at 11:59.96. This marks Harris' first individual qualification at state.

Making their first appearances at state all with third-place finishes will be Afton Hopkins (pole vault), Ali Kamies (100), Austin McCracken (100), Carlee Brumley (300 hurdles) and Macy Kopp (800). 

Two relay teams also placed third and will be heading off to state. The boys 4x100 team of Dylan Sanders, Aaron Cagle, Spencer Ward and McCracken came in at 43.73 and the boys 4x400 of Kendrick Nall, Smith Wheeler, Sanders and Ward clocked in 3:26.92.

The final Eagle and Lady Eagle athletes placed fourth and round out the Nixa's 2021 state qualifiers. Wheeler (200 and 400), Chepkondol (200), Steven Ward (shot put) and Dakota Hale and Koby Graham (javelin).

The Class 5 track and field state championships will be held Thursday, May 27, 2021, at Adkins Stadium on the campus of Jefferson City High School.
