Nixa vs. Marshfield Dec. 6

Nixa notches third-straight win with victory over Marshfield

12/8/2022 12:57:00 PM

Nixa hosted Marshfield for its second-straight home game in a non-conference matchup on Dec. 6, and the Eagles improved to 3-0 with a 58-43 triumph over the Jays.

It was all Nixa in the first quarter, as the Eagles started the game on a 6-0 run and led 10-6 after one.

Norah Clark started the scoring in the second with a jumper from a few feet away from the basket and Lilly Mahy followed up by draining home a 3-pointer, and the Eagles were off to a 5-0 run early in the frame.

Nixa's defense held Marshfield off the scoreboard for almost three minutes until the Jays were able to find the basket in the paint and successfully converted a 3-point play. The Eagles scored the next four points and had its first double-digit lead of 19-9 with 4:41 left in the half.

From there, both offenses started to find their groove, but it was Nixa who had a four-point advantage at the break, leading 24-20.

Marshfield scored the first points of the second half with a 3-pointer, trimming Nixa's lead to just one, and that was the closest the Jays would get to taking the lead at any point in the game. The Eagles' stifling defense again caused problems for the Jays, as Marshfield did not score its next field goal in over two minutes.

With two minutes left in the third, Clark regained Nixa's double-digit lead with a powerful move and finish inside, giving the Eagles a 38-27 advantage. Taylor Hopper was substituted in and ignited the already powerful Nixa defense and grabbed two steals, helping extend Nixa's lead to 44-30 heading into the final quarter of play.

Nixa carried its strong momentum from the third into the fourth, and the Eagles took over the final period. Mahy swished home a trey and gave Nixa its largest lead of the game of 49-32 with six minutes remaining.

The Jays sparked a brief run late in the game and came within eleven twice, 52-41 and 54-43, but the clock was not on their side, and the Eagles were victorious in its third consecutive game.

Nixa connected on 18 of 36 field goals and went four of 13 from behind the arc, all coming from Clark and Mahy. The two led Nixa's offensive attack, as Clark scored 18 with two assists and five rebounds and Mahy scored 9.

Nixa will travel to Kansas City on Dec. 9 and 10 for two non-conference matchups vs. the Class 6 No. 2-ranked Grain Valley Eagles and Lee's Summit West Titans.
