10/13/2023 10:05:00 AM

Nixa used a big eight-run fourth inning and the bats of Jalyn Mabe and Jordan Phillips to defeat Glendale 13-3 in five innings.

Mabe gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead with a solo home run over the center field fence in the bottom of the second.

The Falcons took its first and only lead in the top of the fourth by scoring three runs, but Nixa answered in their half.

Rachel Clemenson doubled to left to begin the inning. Then, four singles in a row by Natalia Pharris, Paige Garetson, Rylee Harper, and Sara Sweaney regained the lead for the Eagles at 4-3. With runners in scoring position and one out, Jordan Phillips hammered a 3-run HR over the left field fence and gave Nixa a four-run cushion. Following Phillips, Bri Chilton singled to left, and Mabe ripped her second HR of the game over the center field fence, extending Nixa's lead to 9-3.

The Eagles ended the game in the ensuing inning. Garetson and Sweaney singled again, and Harper reached base with a walk. Phillips then drew a bases-loaded walk, allowing Garetson to score. An error by the Falcons on a ground ball by Mabe with one out scored Harper. Finally, a 2-run single by Clemenson capped off the 13-3 win for the Eagles.

Chilton was the starting pitcher for the Eagles and earned the win, tossing five innings and allowing two earned runs with four hits and seven strikeouts.

Nixa tallied 15 hits. Phillips (3), Clemenson (3), Garetson (2), Sweaney (2), and Mabe (2) all had multi-hit performances.

The victory sends Nixa to the semifinals vs. No. 3-seed and tournament host Republic, who defeated Lebanon 8-1 in its quarterfinal. First pitch is 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14. The Eagles edged the Tigers 6-4 in the regular-season matchup.

The other semifinal features top-seeded Willard vs. No. 5-seeded Ozark. Willard knocked off Springfield Central 17-0, and Ozark upset Kickapoo 8-2 in the quarterfinals.
