Girls basketball season ends in district semifinals

3/5/2024 9:50:00 AM

In the semifinals of the Class 6 District 5 tournament, Nixa fell in a back-and-forth matchup to Republic 53-49, concluding the Eagles season at 21-7.

Republic led 14-12 after the first and carried a one-point advantage, 23-22, at the intermission.

Out of the break, Nixa led by as much as three early in the third, but Republic went on a run of its own, and each time the Eagles seemed to be gaining momentum, the Tigers answered with a clutch shot. That was portrayed in the fourth quarter as well.

After three, it was 39-36, Republic.

In the fourth quarter, it was an exchange of baskets, and the Eagles defense forced critical turnovers down the stretch to keep Nixa battling. Brooke Teter converted a steal into two points and made it a one-point deficit, 49-48 with 1:20 left. On the ensuing possession, Republic made a triple.

Nixa forced another Republic turnover with 49.5 seconds left, trailing 52-49, but the Tigers responded on the defensive end with a steal of its own, eventually sealing the 53-49 victory.
