3/1/2026 12:32:00 PM

Once again, the Nixa girls wrestling team prevailed on top.

Nixa successfully defended its throne and repeated as MSHSAA Class 2 State Girls Wrestling Champions.

The Eagles sent eight qualifiers, and six wrestlers returned with medals, helping lead the way to a second consecutive state title.

In a tightly contested tournament race from start to finish between the top ten teams, Nixa triumphed in the end. The Eagles were in second place after day one with 54.5, behind Troy's 56 and ahead of Francis Howell Central (53), Willard (52.5), Northwest (44.5), Ft. Osage (42.5), and Liberty (42).

The Eagles six guaranteed medalists kickstarting day two catapulted the team to the top entering the final bouts, where the Eagles were represented in three different weight classes.

With one eventual state champion and two state finalists, Nixa concluded with 122.5 points, besting runner-up Willard, who scored 114. Troy (96) finished third and Liberty (95) fourth.

In its eight-year history of Missouri's girls wrestling state championships, Nixa added its fifth state trophy to the resume.

Of its eight qualifiers, Nixa captured six medalists, including one state champion and two finalists.

First-time qualifier Natalie Edmission had the highlight performance of the tournament. In her only state appearance, the senior captured the 155 championship. Edmission pinned her way to the title, including a first-period win-by-fall (WBF) upset over the top-seeded wrestler in the semifinals. In the title bout, she pinned Francis Howell Central's Halen Phillips with a 10-4 lead in the second period.

Edmission concluded her final go-around atop the 155 podium as the best wrestler in the class with a record 42-7.

Addison Harkins and Kamryn Bourbon also reached the finals but came up just short.

The 2025 defending champ, Harkins, opened up her final state outing with two WBF to secure her fourth consecutive medal. She won 6-1 by decision in the semifinals to reach her fourth straight finals match, setting up a rematch with Willard's Scout Puryear, where the season series was tied 1-1. Previous matchups saw Puryear take the match 16-10, then Harkins 4-3. In the series-deciding bout for the 130 gold, Harkins dropped the match 7-1. She scored an escape late in the third period, making the score 4-1, but time was not on her side to complete the comeback.

Harkins concluded her decorated Nixa career with a senior season record of 43-4 as a 3x state finalist and 2025 state champion.

Seniors Brylee James and Avery Muniz and junior Ashton Mayes also captured medals.

James placed fourth, Muniz fifth, and Mayes sixth in their respective classes.

The third time was the charm for James. After seeing two medal-less outings, James finally captured a state medal by placing fourth in the 135 lbs division. She won 3-2 in the opening match, fell in the quarterfinals, and answered back with a 20-12 major decision win and 3-0 win to finally grasp a right at a medal. Next, the senior defeated Francis Howell North's Aubrey Peterson 3-1 for a berth in the third-place bout, where she eventually fell to Parkway Central's Erin Delling.

James concluded her final season representing the Eagles with a record 41-12 as a 3x qualifier and fourth-place medalist.

In her first state outing, Muniz WBF in the opening match but fell to the defending and eventual state champion in the quarterfinals. She responded with two WBF in under a minute to secure her right to the second day and state medal. Muniz dropped her consolation semifinal and concluded with another WBF in the first period in the fifth-place against Francis Howell Central's Peyton Holland.

Muniz concluded with a record of 42-10.

3x qualifier and medalist Ashton Mayes opened her state outing with a 13-second pin over Lee's Summit North's Grace Conk, but fell by major decision in the next round. Mayes went 2-0 with WBF to reach the next day and guaranteed her third consecutive medal. Mayes fell by tech fall in the consolation semifinals and was pinned in the fifth-place bout, finishing sixth in the 110-lbs division.

Mayes' junior year concluded with a record of 32-15 and a third straight medal. She enters her final season with a career record of 102-28.

First-time qualifier freshman Elaina Goodnight won her opening round matchup with a first-period pin, helping the team in the standings, but was unable to medal. She finished the season with a record of 37-13.

Junior and 2025 medalist Hanna Egley also competed and finished the year with a record of 29-14.

The 2026 state championship for Nixa marks the fifth team trophy since the Missouri girls' inaugural year in 2019, when the Eagles finished second in 2022, fourth in 2023, second in 2024, and went back-to-back in 2025 and 2026 as champions.
