2024 girls swimming state championships central

2/15/2024 10:38:00 AM

The 2024 Missouri State High School Activities Association's (MSHSAA) Class 2 State Girls Swimming and Diving Championships will be held Feb. 16-17 at the St. Peter's Rec-Plex in St. Peter's, Mo.

The swimming preliminary rounds are set for Friday, Feb. 16, at 4:30 p.m. The finals are the following day, Saturday, Feb. 17, at 3 p.m.

According to MSHSAA standards, the top-32 times by individuals entered on MSHSAA's swimming performance list in their respective event qualify for state meet.

Nixa met these standards in three events.

The 400 and 200-freestyle, and 200-medley relays posted regular-season times in the top-32 and qualified.

Nixa's state relay team consists of seniors Sophie Anderson, Keturah Flokstra, Reese Holmes, Lucy Mills, and Kaitlyn Witts, sophomores Lucy Hronek and Lillian Robison, and freshman Kylie Avens.

The 400-free relay team enters state with the highest-ranked time at No. 28. The four of Avens, Hronek, Anderson, and Witts clocked in at 4:01.81 at the SWMO championships to earn their qualification. 4:01.81 bests Jackson (4:02.47), Pattonville (4:03.02), Blue Springs (4:06.10), and Oakville (4:06.35), and is just behind Ft. Zumwalt West (4:01.56) and Carthage (4:00.46). Flokstra, Holmes, Mills, and Robison serve as alternates.

The 200-free team is Hronek, Mills, Avens, and Anderson. Robison, Holmes, Flokstra, and Witts serve as alternates. The team posted a season-best time of 1:49.93 at the Southwest Missouri (SWMO) Championships on Feb. 2 and enters state with the 30th fastest time, ahead of Rock Bridge (1:49.93) and Francis Howell (1:50.22).

In the 200-medley relay, Avens, Robison, Witts, and Hronek swam a season-best 2:04.85 at the Last Chance meet on Feb. 6, earning their state berth. The 2:04.85 time is the 32nd-fastest time entering the state meet. The team surpassed a previous time of 2:04.96, which also would've qualified the team, as the No. 33 time from Ft. Zumwalt West is 2:05.72. Anderson, Mills, Holmes, and Flokstra serve as alternates.

Five Eagles enter state with previous championship experience. 2024 marks Anderson and Witts third state appearance, as each swam a leg or were alternates in previous years. Hronek competed in the in the 200 and 400 relays a year ago, and helped the team place 20th (1:45.47) and 24th (3:56.56). Avens, Flokstra, and Holmes debut in their first appearance.
