Tennis captures district title, awaits quarterfinal matchup with Liberty

10/16/2025 6:00:00 AM

The top-seeded Nixa Eagles appeared in their fourth-straight district title match and hosted the second-seeded Republic Tigers.

It was a rematch of the 2023 district championship match, where Nixa prevailed 5-3. Nixa entered the title tilt highly motivated after falling by one match to Ozark a year ago, stopping its 3-peat bid.

Like 2023, Nixa prevailed over the Tigers 5-1 to regain the district title. The Eagles won all their singles matches and dropped the No. 2 doubles match in a tiebreaker.

The title marks Nixa's third in the last five years and sends the Eagles to the Class 3 state quarterfinals, where the squad will host and face a big test in the Liberty Blue Jays on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 4 p.m..

Liberty (20-3), the top seed in District 8, knocked off  Staley 5-0 and Lee's Summit North  5-2 to secure its fourth straight berth to the state tournament.

The two squads met in the 2022 quarterfinal, and the Blue Jays swept the Eagles. Liberty has reached the Final Four in the previous three seasons, placing fourth in 2022, second in 2023, and third a year ago.

Other quarterfinal matchups entail Cor Jesu Academy and Rock Bridge, John Burroughs and Lafayette (Wildwood), and Lee's Summit and St. Teresa's Academy.

Individually, Nixa's No. 1 doubles pairing and district champs Emily Peterson and Paige qualified for the doubles tournament. For Liberty, the Blue Jays qualified a doubles team (district runners-up) and have both their No. 1 and No. 2 competing in the singles tournament. Both teams' doubles qualifiers are the top eight of the state bracket.

The Class 3 state singles and doubles tournament will be held on October 23-24 (Thursday and Friday) at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo. The tournament features a double-elimination format.

Peterson and Morris are slated to play the District 6 runner-up from Lee's Summit, Kaylie Rustici and Alexis Thompson.
